How to Restore Exchange 2003 Database to Recovery Storage Group

This tutorial aims to describe the function of recovery storage group in Exchange server 2003. The team of Microsoft first time introduced RSG feature in 2003 version of Exchange server, with the help of this feature users can mount the restored copy of database on any Exchange server in a same Administrative Group.
Follow below mentioned instructions which help to you how to restore database using RSG.

Procedure1) Need to Create Recovery Storage Group

Step1) Create Storage Group using Exchange system manager
  • Go to ESM (Exchange System Manager),
  • Click on “+” icon to explore the detail of “Administrative Group” and then
  • Explore the service option by click “+” and
  • Select the “Windows 2003” option and right click on this option
  • Go to New option and select “Recovery Storage Group” option 


Step2) Now Recovery Storage Group Properties windows appear on the screen, click on “OK”


Step3) Now you can see the Recovery Storage Group option is added up in left pane.
  • Right click “RSG” option and then choose “ADD Database to Recover” option. 

Step4) Choose the desired mailbox store which you want to be recovered and click on “OK” button.


Step5) Click on Recovery storage Group and choose the mailbox storage
  • Go to the properties of mailbox storage and click on “Database” tab
  • Check mark on “This database can be overwritten by a restore” option
  • Check the location of EDB and STM file and also you can browse the correct location is its show wrong or empty. 

Now we’re ready to restore mailbox store through the NT Backup

Procedure2) Restore Mailbox from Backup

Step1) Open backup and choose the mailbox store and log file then click on “Start Restore” option 


Step2) Fill the name of Exchange server and enter the location of “Recovery Storage Group” click on “OK”

Step3) Now restoration process is started, once mailbox is restored then move on Exchange System Manager Window where you created RSG.


Step4) Select Mailbox store under the Recovery Storage Group and right click on selected mailbox and choose “mount store” option.


Step5) Now warning window will appear on the screen click on “Yes” button and then “OK” 


Step6) Once again choose mailbox store, right click on this and choose “Refresh” tab. Now you can able to see restored mailbox database.


Step7) Choose data from the mailbox and right click on this and select Exchange Task wizard 


Step8) Click on “Next” to continue 


Step9) Select “Recover Mailbox Data” and then click on “Next”


Step10) File the destination mailbox store path. 


Setp11) This window shows the two options one is “Merge Data” and second one is “Copy Data”

Here we select the first option “Copy Data” and click on “Next”


Step12) This window shows the Task Schedule fill the schedule and click on “Next” 


Step13) This pop-up window shows the live progress status report, once it’s completed then click on “Next”

Step14) This window shows the entire task is done successfully and then click on “Finish” 

 Conclusion
Exchange server 2003 has a really good feature to restore mailbox database using Recovery Storage Group. For performing restoration process, it compulsory you have a complete backup of the database. In case you don’t have good backup then you unable to restore database from Exchange 2003 server in the condition I would suggest try magnificent recovery software for Exchange server, this is too enormous application that assist to restore mailbox data from corrupted Exchange server EDB file to practicable EDB file or Outlook PST file format.
